It depends on how much you owe and what assets you have. If you owe $5k and you're broke, the hospital will usually write it off as a loss. It'll effect your credit score depending on the state you live in as well. If you owe like $150k and you own a house, or have a high-paying career, there's a very high probability they'll take you to court and you'll be forced to enter a payment plan where your wages are garnished from your paycheck, or be forced to liquidate assets to pay off the debt.
