In a trad 401k/IRA you pay full income taxes regardless so I would just stack non qualified funds there like Reits and BDCs if you don't have space in Roth accounts. There's no tax for swapping funds though so you should just keep these in growth index funds until close to retirement. In Roth accounts its similar you can just freely swap from growth funds to these income funds near retirement. Once you hit the age limit for Roth accounts I plan to just start yield maxxing there.
