You're thinking about this wrong. What the chart shows is that you go broke in 1930 followed by an enormous bull run that last 25 years. So you will make your money back after going broke. Just don't be retired when the market crashes - have some gold or property or something lower risk I guess the same thing happened to Japan - with 25 year recovery.
